Learning His World — A Day at the Card Trade Show

Yesterday, I stepped into a world I knew very little about: a card trade show.

To some, it might just be rows of tables, trading cards, and collectors talking stats and strategy. But to me—it was so much more. It was a glimpse into something my husband loved growing up, something that still lights a spark in him. And while I didn’t grow up around trading cards or tournaments, I did grow up learning what love really looks like. And love? It shows up.

I went not because I suddenly discovered a deep passion for cards, but because I have a deep passion for him.

As I walked the aisles, asked (probably silly) questions, and watched him light up explaining it all, I was reminded of how God calls us to love — not only in big, dramatic ways, but in small, intentional ones. In Philippians 2:4, we’re reminded: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” It’s not about pretending to be into something we’re not. It’s about caring because they care. It’s about presence. About partnership.

Marriage has a funny way of asking you to learn new “languages” of love. Sometimes it’s navigating hard seasons together. Other times, it’s simply spending a Saturday learning the difference between a first edition card and a reprint — because it matters to the one you love.

So no, I didn’t walk away with a new hobby (though I did get some cool cards for myself 😄), but I did walk away with a deeper connection — with him and with the gentle, everyday ways God teaches us to love like Jesus.

Call to Action:

Is there something your spouse (or someone you love) is passionate about that you’ve never explored? I encourage you to take a step into their world this week — ask a question, join them in their interest, or simply show up. You don’t have to understand it all to make them feel seen.

Love shows up. And that’s where connection — and Christ — meet us in the ordinary.

Let me know in the comments: What’s something you’ve done to support your spouse in their interests? I’d love to hear your stories.
