Weekly Reflection | What Self-Awareness Is Teaching Me

There was a time when I thought self-discovery meant finding the perfect label.

You know the ones.

"I'm an ENTJ."

"I'm a Manifestor."

"I'm a Leo Sun, Aquarius Moon, Scorpio Rising."

"I'm an Enneagram ___."

"I'm an empath."

At one point, I was collecting personality assessments the way some people collect coffee mugs.

Every time I took a new assessment, I would think:

"Well...that explains a lot."

And honestly? Sometimes it did.

But over the past year—through Bible reading, prayer, healing, therapy, community, and this ongoing transformation journey—I've realized something important:

None of these things define me.

Yet all of them have helped reveal patterns that God has been showing me my entire life.

Self-Awareness Isn't Identity

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that awareness and identity are not the same thing. An assessment can tell you how you tend to think.cIt can highlight strengths. It can expose blind spots.

It can even explain why certain situations energize or drain you.

But it cannot tell you who God created you to become.

That's where many of us get stuck.

We start treating the description as a destination instead of a starting point.

We say: "That's just who I am."

When maybe God is saying: "That's where you're starting."

The Funny Thing About All These Assessments...

The more I studied different systems, the more I noticed they kept pointing to similar themes.

ENTJ

The Myers-Briggs assessment describes ENTJs as strategic leaders who like structure, vision, efficiency, and solving problems. Checks out. I've been organizing people since childhood. I'm pretty sure I came out of the womb with a project plan and a color-coded spreadsheet.

Human Design: Manifestor

Manifestors are often described as initiators.

People who start movements.

People who create momentum.

People who challenge the status quo.

Again ... not entirely inaccurate.

Leo Sun

Leadership.

Visibility.

Confidence.

Creativity.

Being willing to step into the spotlight.

Aquarius Moon

Deep thinker.

Visionary.

Independent.

Passionate about community and helping others.

Scorpio Rising

Transformation.

Resilience.

Reinvention.

The ability to walk through difficult seasons and emerge stronger.

When I looked across all of them, I couldn't help but laugh. Because although they use different language, they kept highlighting many of the same patterns. Not my identity. Just patterns.

The Patterns God Keeps Revealing

The first pattern is leadership.

For years, I thought leadership meant having the answers. Now I think leadership is having the courage to keep showing up even when you don't. Leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room. It's about creating space for others to grow.

It's about serving.

It's about stewarding influence well.

The second pattern is over-giving.

This one stung. Because helping people feels good. Supporting people feels good. Showing up feels good. Until one day you realize you've been pouring from an empty cup and wondering why you're exhausted.

Many assessments called it compassion.

Others called it generosity.

God called it something deeper: A lesson in boundaries.

Because even Jesus rested.

Even Jesus withdrew.

Even Jesus didn't heal every single person He encountered.

That realization changed me.

Boundaries Are Not Rejection

For a long time I confused boundaries with selfishness.

I thought saying "no" meant letting people down.

What I've learned is that boundaries are actually stewardship.

They protect your energy.

They protect your purpose.

They protect your peace.

Most importantly, they make room for the things God is actually calling you to do.

Not every opportunity is your assignment.

Not every request requires your yes.

Not every battle deserves your energy.

The Lesson I Keep Learning: Surrender

This has probably been the hardest one. As someone who naturally likes strategy, planning, and execution, surrender feels wildly inefficient.

I want the roadmap.

God wants the trust.

I want certainty.

God wants faith.

I want answers.

God often gives me the next step.

This transformation journey has taught me that growth isn't always about doing more. Sometimes growth is releasing more.

Releasing control.

Releasing timelines.

Releasing expectations.

Releasing outcomes.

The more I surrender, the more peace I find. Not because life becomes easier.

But because I stop trying to carry things that were never mine to carry.

Purpose Is Bigger Than Personality

The greatest realization from this season is that purpose is bigger than personality.

God can use an introvert.

God can use an extrovert.

God can use leaders.

God can use followers.

God can use planners.

God can use creatives.

God can use people who feel ready.

And He can absolutely use people who don't.

The personality assessment might explain how you naturally operate.

But God determines why you were created.

That difference matters.

What My Bible Reading Has Reinforced

One of the things I've noticed while reading through Scripture this year is that God consistently used imperfect people.

Moses doubted.

David failed.

Peter was impulsive.

Paul was relentless.

Joseph endured betrayal.

Ruth demonstrated loyalty.

None of them were defined by their personality.

They were defined by their obedience. And that's the part that keeps challenging me. Because at the end of the day, God isn't asking me to become a better ENTJ. He's asking me to become more Christ-like. He's not asking me to become a better Manifestor. He's asking me to trust Him more. He's not asking me to perfectly fit a description.

He's inviting me into transformation.

The Journey of Becoming

So if you've ever taken a personality test, read your horoscope, explored Human Design, or found yourself wondering why you are the way you are, here's what I've learned:

Take the insight.

Keep the awareness.

Learn the lessons.

Notice the patterns.

But don't let any label become a limitation.

You are more than a type.

More than a result.

More than a stereotype.

More than a category.

You are a person being shaped, refined, stretched, healed, and transformed by God.

And maybe that's what this entire journey of becoming is really about.

Not discovering who we are.

But allowing God to reveal who we were created to become.

"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." — Romans 12:2

Still learning.

Still surrendering.

Still becoming.
