The Benefits of Traveling Solo

Back in February, I volunteered for a community service event with American Express where we would be cleaning the Grand Canyon Campgrounds (June 22nd-June 24th). Majority of the volunteers camped but I decided to get a hotel since it was my first time. My sister was originally going to go with me on the trip.

As the day approached, no one was going to be able to make it with me so I decided to still attend. Solo. Never had I taken a trip without a family member, friend or boyfriend. I always had someone with me.

Let me tell you, it felt great!

I love traveling with my family and friend, but traveling solo had some great benefits to it.

Free to do what I want.

I got stuck in traffic due to a wild fire on my way to the Canyon, taking a total of 3 hours. Long day at work and I was exhausted. However, I really wanted to go to the star gazing ever at the Grand Canyon that only happens one week out of the year. I just dropped my things at the hotel, got in the truck and drove 45 min up to the Canyon. It was beautiful!! Made it just in time for the sunset and did one of the star gazing tours. Hung out and enjoyed the view to the billion stars above me and was fortunate to see a glimpse of a shooting star!!

As small as this may seem, making a last minute decision can prove difficult with a group or family. It may require some convincing versus just doing it. There was no hesitation or having to consult with the group. I owned my decision and didn't look back.

Forced me out of my comfort Zone.

It put my networking skills to practice! I did not know anyone that was going to be attending the event, so I had to take the initiative and talk to various people in order to get to know them and not be an outsider. I met multiple families, hung out with them, and had an amazing time giving back to the community! There was a Potluck after a long day of hard work filled with laughs, stories and sense of unity.

Relaxing with the Locals.

On Saturday, after deciding to sleep in, I made the decision to just hang out in the small town of Williams, Arizona. Walked to a breakfast place, had some coffee, and enjoyed a delicious breakfast. It was still early and no set itinerary, so I began walking the town. Stopped by at a local bar and had the opportunity to talk to one of the locals that shared a wealth of history on the surrounding towns and areas that I could visit. We had a good time conversing over some good music, drinks and laughs. He was a Vietnam vet and loyal to his country. Chances are that our paths would of never crossed had I been with my own group of friends or family.

Made a few purchases to support the locals, had dinner on my own, followed by a good nights rest.

It was an amazing experience and I would encourage everyone to take a trip on their own. Doesn't have to be a long trip or distant, but just enough time to find an escape. Learn to enjoy time on your own while embracing our beautiful surroundings.

Happy Travels!
